Team Building and Team Development

PsyPotential offers team building programmes at different levels of depth and intensity. These vary from fun game-based away days that include both indoor and outdoor activities to a more psychological programme aimed at strengthening relationships and resolving potential issues that block effective teamwork. There is also the possibility of combining the two and creating programmes that include a fun element as well as the in-depth psychological dimension. PsyPotential provides organisations with a variety of team building events and activities for both small and large groups. The following are our core services.

Outdoor Team Building Events

PsyPotential offers half-day or full-day team building events that are based on activities for all levels of fitness and ability. These activities are fun, competitive and challenging and encourage people to work as a team. These team building events can be held for small groups or departments to large groups depending on the need of the organisation. The following are some activities that are typically carried out:

  • Building of a roller coaster that carries a ball from point A to point B without it falling.
  • Building of medieval catapults which are then fired on targets.
  • Obstacle races with various levels of challenges.
  • Construction of bows and arrows which are then tested in an archery competition.
  • Developing thematic sketches with costumes and music.
  • Various water games with varying degrees of difficulty.
  • Fun races with various challenges along the way.
  • Mini treasure hunts.
  • Trust exercises.
Indoor Team Building Events

Whether it is too cold and wet or too hot and sticky, companies often opt for indoor team building events in the comfort of a heated or air-conditioned room. PsyPotential can organise these events on multiple scales in an indoor environment. The activities are challenging and fun and require a high degree of collaboration, cooperation, group problem solving and teamwork. Most of the outdoor activities have their indoor version, however the following are a few additional exercises that are normally only carried out indoors:

  • Cluedo type mysteries that need to be solved in a limited time frame.
  • Building of straw structures that need to support a particular weight for an amount of time.
  • Building a “pipeline” that carries golf balls from one end of the room to another through a prescribed route.
  • Challenging puzzles that require a lot of “outside the box” thinking.
  • Balloon games.
  • Other games that require physical cooperation between team members.
  • Art based exercises where participants have to put works of art together from various parts.

In both outdoor and indoor events and when groups are of a manageable size, PsyPotential recommends and provides a degree of processing of the activities held so that key learning points can be drawn from the exercises. This results in more learning and better transfer and application of the team building events to the daily working reality of the participants.

Enhancing Team Dynamics and Cohesion

This type of team building event has more of a psychological element and focuses on in-depth exercises that serve to build the team and strengthen the relationships within it. This form of team building requires smaller groups of not more than fifteen participants. The following are some of the exercises that are held:

Assessment Tools

Team members fill in various questionnaires that assess the team and how it functions on a number of criteria. This exercise often serves to bring to the surface any issues regarding the team that need to be addressed or worked on and is a very effective way of assessing where the team is in terms of functioning, relationships, dynamics, etc.

Team Profile Mapping

Every team member completes a personality test that indicates their type and how this plays out in a team. The various profiles are then mapped to create a team profile which is discussed in terms of strengths, weaknesses, gaps, and challenges for improvement.

Feedback Session

This is a session based on the understanding of the Johari Window where team members are invited to give feedback to each other regarding the role they play in the team and how this helps or hinders team functioning. The main aim of this exercise is that team members are challenged on their “blind” spots so that they can work on the feedback they receive and improve their team behaviour and functioning.

Processed Exercises

These are game-based exercises that require group problem solving, decision-making, consensus reaching, discussions, etc. Following these exercises there is a lot of emphasis on processing the experience to bring out the key insights and learning points about how the team functioned and how this can be applied to the daily reality of the team.

Relationship Building

These are exercises that focus on strengthening and building the relationships in the team by creating structured opportunities for members to get to know each other on a personal level. This type of “sharing” only happens when the relationships in the team are healthy enough to take this level of vulnerability between members of the team. However, it is a very powerful exercise and when carried out well, can have very positive long-lasting effects.

Team Evaluation Process

This exercise consists of a facilitated process whereby the team looks at how it started, where it is in the present moment and where it wants to go and how it is going to get there. This often takes the form of an “away day” where members of the team can slow down and reconnect to the original purpose of the team, take stock of the current state of affairs and map the way forward that will take it towards the projected vision of the team that is in line with its mission and values.
